Many Ways to Support Us

Winchester Hospital has grown remarkably during the last century. But what is unchanged is the financial support that Winchester Hospital continues to receive from our generous and giving community.

When Winchester Hospital opened its doors in a refurbished home in 1912, it had just one operating room and a handful of patient beds. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of members of the Visiting Nurse Association, enough donations were raised to build a new hospital to support the growing health care needs of area residents. These visionary women looked to the generous spirit of the community for support. This unwavering community support has made us what we are today, and what we will be tomorrow.

Our work would not be possible without the generous friends who share our commitment. We invite you to learn about the many ways in which you can donate to Winchester Hospital.

Donors can specify that their gifts be directed to a particular medical specialty, such as cardiovascular care, surgical care, cancer care and others. However, unrestricted gifts support our most important initiatives and needs in patient care, training and technology.

Champions of Care

During your time at Winchester Hospital, did a nurse, physician, other staff member, or volunteer go above and beyond to provide superb care? Did a caregiver go out of his or her way to make sure that you were comfortable, offer you encouragement or help address your concerns?

If so, you may wish to make a donation in honor of someone who made a difference to you. Your “Champion of Care” will receive an acknowledgment letter and a pin that designates him or her as a Champion of Care. This recognition of both their personal commitment and professional expertise is highly rewarding for our staff.

The greatest benefit of making a gift to the Champions of Care program is knowing that you are making a difference in the lives of others. Winchester Hospital is a nonprofit medical center. Your gifts enable us to attract highly qualified staff, buy vital new equipment, expand and refurbish medical facilities, fund physician and nursing education, offer patient education and support groups, and support essential hospital services.

If you’d like to honor a Winchester Hospital caregiver in this special way, you may make an online donation now.

First Steps

When each new bundle of joy arrives at Winchester Hospital, we sound chimes throughout the building to welcome our tiniest newcomers. Our First Steps program offers a meaningful way for you to celebrate your baby’s arrival — and make a caring gift to future newborns.

Honor a newborn with a gift that supports vital needs in Maternal Child Health, including the Special Care Nursery and Mother Baby Unit. The baby’s name will be displayed on a commemorative footprint plaque on the distinctive donor wall outside the Mother Baby Unit. For more information, please contact Nancy Breton, 781.756.2158.

When you donate long-term appreciated securities to Winchester Hospital, you can claim the full value of the gift as a charitable deduction.

Gifts of securities — such as individual stocks, bonds, or mutual fund shares — can benefit both you and Winchester Hospital. A gift of securities has tax benefits that increase the value of your gift. This may allow you to make a larger gift than if you first sold the securities and then donated the net proceeds.

Instructions for delivering gifts of securities and cash wire are available here.

For assistance in making a gift of securities, please email or call us at 781.756.2156.

The Richard C. Heidbreder, MD, Patient Comfort Fund

Your gift to the Richard C. Heidbreder, MD, Patient Comfort Fund will help positively affect the quality of life and dignity of our cancer patients.

The fund was established in 2011 in honor of Dr. Heidbreder, who as Winchester Hospital’s Medical Director of Radiation Oncology was known for his compassion and kindness. Dr. Heidbreder expressly wanted the fund to help patients with expenses outside the standard cancer treatment.

Today, the fund is an essential resource for Winchester Hospital’s cancer patients. Your gift to the fund helps supply patients with gift cards for everyday needs, as well as helping with the cost of supportive therapies like massage, acupuncture and yoga, all provided through Winchester Hospital’s Center for Healthy Living in Woburn. For Colleagues

Colleagues and volunteers working every day at Winchester Hospital have great pride in providing world-class, compassionate care to our patients. Care2Share, our colleague giving program, offers an opportunity for individuals to make gifts to the hospital.

In the past 10 years, colleagues have given a staggering $6.4 million to our members of the Lahey Health System, including Winchester Hospital.

Funds raised year-round from Care2Share help us recruit and retain top staff, keep our equipment up-to-date, make improvements to our physical plant and purchase new technology. They help us deliver world-class care to our patients and provide a workplace we can be proud of. Gifts become part of Winchester Hospital’s unrestricted funds. This means the funds can be used where they are most urgently needed to keep us on the cutting edge of care.
