Colleague Giving

Catch the Dream, Join the Team

Nurse and ED Technician Inspire Colleague Giving

“In the end, when we give to the hospital, it is all about our patients. It’s not giving to some unknown, far-away corporation; it’s giving to all of those whom we are blessed to care for each and every day,” said Janet Lations, RN, a staff nurse on one of Beverly Hospital’s medical-surgical floors. “I am proud to invest in this hospital. I believe in what we do, and I truly love our patients.”

This year, Lations was joined as co-chair of the annual colleague giving campaign, Care 2 Share, by Nolan Duffy, an emergency room technician at Addison Gilbert Hospital. Their personal enthusiasm sparked an amazing outpouring of support from 470 colleague and physician donors who participated in the Care 2 Share campaign in FY16, raising $45,000 for the two hospitals. Every day, they observe and evaluate their organization from unique front-row seats. “If our management was not listening and leading well, then our employees would not have the high morale that they do, and they would not give to this appeal,” Duffy observed.

Teamwork and Family

Beverly and Addison Gilbert hospitals have a special culture of teamwork. These revered community institutions encourage a work atmosphere of respect among colleagues and of compassion for patients. A unique sense of family flourishes in the hallways, where staff members from all parts of the organization greet each other by name with a genuine, caring smile.

“People come to work openly happy,” said Lations. “They do not come just to punch a clock. They truly care about their patients. It is their way to make a difference in the world. We know that, together, we are giving patients — who are so often our close friends and neighbors — the best possible care. It is satisfying to be a part of such a team. I’ve worked at other hospitals, and I can see a special, distinct sentiment here: It is as if we are all one family, taking care of our own and keeping everyone close to home.”

Every Gift Matters

The sense of teamwork extends to the colleague giving campaign. The motivating slogan for this year’s effort was Catch the Dream. Join the Team. “Each individual’s participation matters if we want to make a difference that counts. We are stronger together,” said Lations, who once completed the Paris marathon and clearly understands motivation.

The gifts that the colleague campaign generates make Beverly and Addison Gilbert hospitals stronger, too. With all the challenges facing community hospitals, investing to keep them healthy and strong and there when they are needed is the right thing to do. Lations, Duffy and their colleagues all recognize that.
