Lahey Volunteers Serving the World
From Appalachia and New Orleans to Syria, Haiti, Kenya and dozens of other countries, Lahey Hospital & Medical Center doctors and nurses volunteer their time and expertise to treat individuals in need. They care for children and adults facing poverty, natural disasters, war and other realities that limit their access to medical care.
Staff representing 25 different hospital departments have traveled around the world since the Global Outreach Program began in 1993. Our doctors and nurses spend a week or more donating their expertise in places where health care is limited — and where they improve and even save lives. They return to Lahey energized, motivated and eager to reconnect with their patients and the practice of medicine.
Supporting the Global Outreach Program is an investment in the quality of care at Lahey.
What do Lahey Global Outreach Volunteers Do?
Lahey physicians and staff provide free medical care to people in need all over the world. They join existing medical missions with established humanitarian organizations. They treat patients in need, set up new programs and teach local physicians and nurses, giving generously of their time and skills. They have traveled to Africa, Asia, Europe, South America and to areas of the U.S. with limited resources or devastated by disaster. All volunteers provide hands-on care to patients in need.
How Does It Work?
We provide funding for travel expenses for Lahey Hospital & Medical Center staff who participate in short-term medical mission trips with established humanitarian organizations.
Our volunteers apply to the Global Outreach Program for grants to fund their travel to medical missions. A committee of both medical and non-medical staff reviews all requests and makes grants twice each year.
How Can You Help?
We depend on philanthropy – gifts from individuals — who want to help the Global Outreach thrive and grow. Gifts to the program will help us involve more doctors and nurses and ultimately, change more lives around the world. To learn more, contact Patricia Newton at 781.744.3333.
